We met while touring Europe in 1997. Since then, Pat and Phil came to America twice to visit us, first in 2002 and then again in 2010. In between, the four of us have toured the south of England together in 2008. Then in 2012 we flew to Adelaide and toured southeastern Australia and New Zealand with them. Now once again we come together, this time in Edinburgh, to do Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Friday

Sorry for the delay but Internet at our hotel in Canberra was $4 per 15 minutes. We left Hay at about 8:30. By the way, we are now 16 hours ahead of you. Hay Plains continued for quite some time before we gradually moved into rolling hills with very few trees but plenty of sheep. We stopped for coffee (I had chocolate milk) and goodies at a bakery in Narrandera and for lunch at Trapper’s Bakery in Wagga Wagga. In between, we passed out of the quarantined area. I forgot to say that that region does not have a certain fruit fly and the quarantine is design to keep it that way. This time we all saw the emus—two of them. We also passed all sorts of fruit trees, grape vines, olive trees and irrigated fields of various crops. Before long we were in the ACT (Australian Capital Territory), much like our District of Columbia, only in the mountains. We found our hotel, Clifton Suites, in Canberra without effort. After settling in, we decided to walk to city center. There was plenty of Friday night activity, and we found Ploy Thai for dinner and had a delicious banquet.

  1. Have you seen any of those evil toads that are trying to take over Australia?
